The area code for the ring on suburbs around the city of Toronto, it stretches from Oshawa in the East, to Hamilton in the West and the sprawling York and Durham regions to the North. In political terms it has been used to differentiate suburban voters from urban or “downtown” voters. It is contended that 905ers tend to be more socially conservative and anti-tax than voters living within Toronto’s 416 area code.
This was certainly the case with Mike Harris’ [see การพนันบอลออนไลน์Common Sense Revolution] provincial Progressive Conservatives and Stephen Harper’s federal Conservatives. To avoid the reference to Toronto, federal Conservatives began to use the phrase “Tim Horton’s voters” [see Tim Horton’s Voters] to describe their targeted suburban demographic.
However, Jean Chretien’s federal Liberals, over three elections (1993, 1997 and 2000) swept both the 905 and 416, as did Kathleen Wynne’s Ontario Liberals in 2014 and Justin Trudeau’s federal Liberals in 2015.
